Year in Brief (posted 6/15/2010)

The Foundation has had a very successful year. Thanks to your support, we have been able to run key activities and fund over $21,000 to fulfill requests from our faculty and staff.  Requests funded:

  • InDesign & Photoshop software for the entire school
  • Financial support for conferences: Visual Arts to participate in a Film Festival, Dance to attend the National High School Dance Festival, Business to attend FBLA competitions
  • Funding for supplies for Rubber Mold making for Visual Arts, engineering club for the Kinetic Sculpture Race, National Art Honor Society Mural, National High School Model United Nations conference
  • Scholarships for the advanced Sculpture summer program
  • CPU's for Learning Resources
The Carver Center Foundation also orchestrated the donation of 108 computers and accessories for the school, created and manage (with CCAT's IT Department) our Foundation website, ran our most successful Carver Celebration ever, implemented an Adult Volunteer Social to thank our volunteers and improve networking, and began a Board of Education Liaison Committee to work with the state legislatures, Board of Education, and the community to ensure Carver Center's recognition and security as an all-magnet school, as well as attended events to raise community awareness such as talks at Kiwanis, Social Security Administration, and Chamber of Commerce.

Additionally, we provided the family directory and kept an up to date bulletin board at school for improved communications, ran or supported our "usual" fun activities: Freshman Walk Through, Back to School night, New Student Ice Cream Social, New Student Registration, Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, After Prom Party, as well as funded PSAT testing, Carnations for graduating seniors, and Scholarships for graduating seniors.

Wow, what a busy year! We hope we can count on you to make 2010/2011 an even more productive year.  Make sure to save the date for our newest fundraiser, the "Adults" Bull Roast November 6, 2010.

Over One Hundred Computers Donated to Carver Center (posted 4/26/2010)

On Thursday, April 15, 2010, Carver Center loading dock received a most generous donation of 108 PCs, keyboards and mice along with 72 monitors from the Social Security Administration. The timing was extraordinary, as the Carver Center Foundation had received urgent requests for computers this year, which are now being fulfilled. Many of the computers were put to immediate use in classrooms and departments throughout Carver Center. In the library, students are already taking note and have commented on how much faster and nicer they are to work with. In addition computers have also been distributed to Vocal Room 108, Sculpture and both Painting Studios, Social Studies Trailer One, Culinary, Athletics, Learning Resources, Math Lobby Classroom, Tech Education Room 205, Cosmetology and Dance.

Heartfelt thanks to the donor of this much needed hardware, the Social Security Administration, and to the Rotary Club of Owings Mills, Reisterstown who worked out all the logistics, to Easy Movers-MD who provided the delivery truck and mover, and to Joe Schonfeld, owner of Fast Signs Owings Mills and a Celebration Sponsor, for uncovering and initiating the opportunity. Their generosity is quickly and significantly benefitting Carver Center!

Baltimore County to leave magnet teachers in place (posted 2/09/2010)

Untold Mysteries of the New Building (posted 1/25/2010)

As most have probably noticed, there’s a bit of upheaval going on behind and beside the school building and Project Manager of the Construction Site, George Thomas sheds some light on the construction and future plans for the school.

Many people have been distraught, if not vocal, about the demolition of the trees that used to surround Carver Center, but there’s no need to fret. Thomas explains: “There is a reforestation program which is a Baltimore County guideline.” This means that a new tree will be planted for each tree that is cut down. Typically, trees are planted on the property that is being developed, but because there will not be enough land left for trees when the school is finished, each new tree will be planted somewhere else in Baltimore county. The old trees used to reduce runoff from the parking lots and driveway of Carver. However, the new school will feature a retention pond to take up this important function. The retention pond catches all runoff water (or as much as possible) and prevents pollution, erosion, and flooding. Plants can grow on the outside of the pond and create wetlands; animals can live there which establishes a mini-ecosystem. To read more click here.

Flapjack Fundraiser raises $710.00 (posted 11/21/2009)

A fun time was had by all who attended the first fundraiser of the year on November 21st, 2009; a Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee's, Timonium, MD. The restaurant was staffed by wonderful Carver Center student volunteers who greeted and seated our patrons, served the delicious food and drinks, and bussed tables. They had such a good time, they've asked us to do another similar fundraiser in the Spring!

The Flapjack Fundraiser included unlimited pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee, a 50/50 raffle, and the opportunity to buy our new Carver Center window clings*, selling at just $3.00 each. Thanks to all of you faculty, parents, and friends of Carver Center who came out to support us.

Special thanks to Denise Shade for coordinating this event, Heidi Hiller for designing the new Carver Center window clings, and to the Bronfein's who won the 50/50 raffle, and generously donated their winnings back to the Carver Center Foundation.
